Hummus, anyone?

Lately one of Oliver’s favorite lunches is hummus and whole wheat pita. I think he likes it because it is easy for him to feed himself.

Plus, he thinks that hummus is frosting. I’ll admit, I’m happy to encourage that idea for as long as I can. Unfortunately, one of Oliver’s least favorite things is being messy. Since eating hummus by himself usually leads to a mess, it can be a recipe for trouble.

Believe it or not, the only thing that was wrong was that Oliver didn’t want hummus on his face or in his hair. A reasonable enough request, certainly, but I didn’t expect it to be quite so traumatizing to a 17-month old boy.

Dad, will you please clean me up now?

  1. That’s so funny! It’s pretty good that he likes hummus at such a young age. He’s truly an easterner now! Hummus is the thing to eat out here on the east coast I’ve found. I never had eaten it until I moved to New York. I may have to post this picture as the background on my computer.

  2. Gee, you guys are really into the healthy foods (actually, I don’t know the nutritional value of hummus, but I am pretty sure whole wheat anything is healthy). What ever happened to good old sugar-laden frosting? 🙂

  3. Hummus is definitely a big thing out East. While I had eaten it occasionally in Utah, hummus is ubiquitous out here. They always have hummus at retirement parties at work, someone always brings hummus to our community barbecues, and I’ve yet to see a ward activity here that involves food without hummus!

  4. NO ONE in Texas eats hummus! Seriously! They don’t even know what it is – I’m not sure I totally do either. All they eat out here is ribs, hot wings, chips and salsa, and beer. I like the ribs, hot wings and chips and salsa. I’ve never tried the beer. People at Jared’s work tell him that they don’t drink and then they always order beer – I guess beer isn’t considered a “drink” out here. Anyway, we do have this one vegan friend who always makes disgusting soy based ice cream for us to try at parties. The last batch was pistachio cardamom ice cream. I didn’t even try it cause … eww.

Good job feeding Oliver healthy (non sugar) food. Hopefully his teeth won’t rot out of his head like Tyler’s did. One really did and now he has a fake metal tooth to keep the space open till his permanent molar grows in. It only cost us about $700.
